Hope on the Streets

Last year's Hope on the Streets day in Netherthorpe/Langsett was such a great success, that we thought it was about time we did it all over again. This time we worked together with local churches, rather than hosting supporters from across Sheffield.

On the day, volunteers from St Stephen's, St Barts, the Salvation Army, Hampden View and St Thomas Philadelphia went out together on a number of projects, to bless our local communities and build on relationships that are already in place. Walkley Primary School's football pitch got a good clear-out, with lots of long grass, weeds and tree branches taken away (about 10 one-tonne builder's bags of green waste were removed, ready for chipping and composting). At the Edward Street flats, several volunteers (including members of our Beyond teenagers group), cleared all the litter they could find, much to the delight of many residents. They worked so well, that they were all done by lunch time and a few were able to go back and play rounders in the afternoon! Another project involved taking food parcels into a short-term housing centre in the area.

For anyone who didn't make it along this time, we hope you are encouraged by the feedback from those who were there. We look forward to doing this again in the new year.

Joint celebration with St Barts

Over the next year St Stephens and St Barts are going to be exploring whether or not God has a plan for us working together more closely. To celebrate the start of this time, both churches got together to share in an afternoon of food and dance.
Oscar the Frog once again provided the music and the dancing instruction. A range of sandwiches and other lunchtime delights were provided by our caterers. Everyone else provided the enthusiasm and the willingness to join in.

Whatever the eventual outcome, we hope this is the starting point for a good number of friendships between the two church families.

New Wine 2009

Bring and share picnic

Another inspiring, challenging and fun-filled New Wine has come to an end. This year about 40 people from St Stephen's went along, camping as a group and sharing many evenings (and bottles of wine) together. The (alternative) morning teaching from The Message Trust continued last year's high standards of both entertainment and a challenge to step out to those with whom Jesus spent the most time - the poor, the needy; those who everyone else walks away from. The evening talks included a great variety of topics - mission to China, being a Christian in the media and being a 'secret pastor' to your non-Christian friends.

As always, the market place contained far too many books to buy and copies of all the talks you didn't quite make it to, so you can catch up with what you missed at a later date.

The prize for the most unusual part of the week should probably go to Phil commandeering a cornder of the main Meeting Place for our St Stephen's bring-and-share picnic (pictured, left), after a torrential downpour scuppered our plans to hold it outside. Phil even borrowed the industrial hoover to clean up after us.
