Christmas Lunch

After the success of last year, it was not a big surprise when we once again opened up the doors of St Stephens to anyone who wanted to join us for Christmas lunch.
As with last time, there was a good mix of regular members of the church family, along with friends from the local area and beyond. We were treated to starters of French toast with pate and humous, a main course of turkey and full trimmings (including cabbage and sprouts, for those who insist on eating them...) and Christmas pudding to follow.
All this was accompanied by a generous supply of wine, fruit punch and Christmas music. I am sure this will be happening again next year, so if you missed out this time, put it in the diary.

Cafe 2nd Birthday

The Thursday morning Community Cafe is now 2 years old. Over this time we have served countless cooked breakfasts, bacon sandwiches, cups of coffee and toasted teacakes to the many people who have dropped in on us. We have met many new people and welcomed back our regulars each week.
This Sunday, to celebrate this event (and to look forward to many more years to come), we ran cafe instead of our usual morning service.
Our church family was joined by many familiar faces from the cafe, as well as friends and family from further afield. The usual Thursday menu was supplemented by a beautifully-decorated birthday cake (complete with an iced fried breakfast), as well as a number of thoughtful prayer stations, some live music and Godly Play stories.
In the end we served over 50 fried breakfasts (not including bacon sandwiches, cereals and teacakes) and there was a great atmosphere about the place. Hopefully this won't be the last time that we get together like this...

Hope on the Streets

Last year's Hope on the Streets day in Netherthorpe/Langsett was such a great success, that we thought it was about time we did it all over again. This time we worked together with local churches, rather than hosting supporters from across Sheffield.
On the day, volunteers from St Stephen's, St Barts, the Salvation Army, Hampden View and St Thomas Philadelphia went out together on a number of projects, to bless our local communities and build on relationships that are already in place. Walkley Primary School's football pitch got a good clear-out, with lots of long grass, weeds and tree branches taken away (about 10 one-tonne builder's bags of green waste were removed, ready for chipping and composting). At the Edward Street flats, several volunteers (including members of our Beyond teenagers group), cleared all the litter they could find, much to the delight of many residents. They worked so well, that they were all done by lunch time and a few were able to go back and play rounders in the afternoon! Another project involved taking food parcels into a short-term housing centre in the area.
For anyone who didn't make it along this time, we hope you are encouraged by the feedback from those who were there. We look forward to doing this again in the new year.
